I went on the annual bowhunt in late August. We usually go Elk and Deer hunting, but this year I didn’t get an Elk tag. I just stuck with the deer tag. Me, Dad, David, Brent, Mike, Brian, Tye, and the kids all went. We had a good time. At first, we didn’t see really much wildlife at all. There were no deer to be found. Just a few does here and there. No elk or even sign. We went all over looking for them, but didn’t find any.
Finally on the last night before we were going to leave, we saw a couple decent little bucks but didn’t get a shot at them. So the last morning, David, Dad, and I got up to go road hunting and we saw a nice big buck, but as soon as I drew back to shoot, it took off and I flung and shot over it’s head from about 20 yard. Pathetic!
So then a little further back the other way, we came to a spot we never see deer, and I thought to myself “we never see anything here. I wonder why.” And right after that we saw a little 2 point buck standing there. David and I jumped down to see if we could get off a shot. I let David shoot first, because he didn’t get a chance to shoot at the first one. He got a direct hit! Right into a tree about 10 feet away from him. But the deer had run off the side of the road, which was about a 30 yard drop, so David hit the tree about 20 feet off the ground. The arrow is still there.
Meanwhile, I headed off in to the trees to see if I could get a shot off. The deer stopped about 50 yards away for just a second in front of a tree and I drew back and let it fly. I heard my arrow hit a tree, but the deer acted like it was hit. So I went down there and sure enough, the arrow went clean through the deer and into the tree. We went back to the truck to give the deer time to lay down and drove on ahead to let David have another chance.
Well, not too much further down the road, we saw three more bucks. David and Dad headed out after them and David took a shot. When he found his arrow, it was bent clear back on itself like a letter “J”. It was crazy! But he missed the deer, anyway.
So we went back to take care of my kill. David and I saw it from the road as we drove past, so I went down to it and it was only 60 yards away from where I shot it. It had gone right down. Later we found out that the arrow had gone right through the center of the heart. So, we had the deer back to camp and cleaned by 10:00 and could pack up camp and go home. It worked out to be a good hunt despite seeing nothing for the first few days.
Anyway, here’s a few pictures that I took over the weekend.
